By Air

International flights arrive in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. The national airline is Mongolian Airlines (MIAT). There are direct flights from Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, Moscow, Berlin, and Istanbul. For more information, see International Flights to Mongolia.

By Train

Most visitors fly into Mongolia, but that's not the only way to get there. There are overland routes from Russia and China. Traveling by train is possible via two border crossings:

  • Via the Altanbulag Border Crossing (entering Mongolia from Russia)
  • Via the Zamyn-Uud Border Crossing (entering Mongolia from China)

Passenger trains operated by Mongolian Railways run between Mongolia, Russia, and China. The Russian Trans-Siberian Railway also passes through Mongolia, stopping in Ulaanbaatar before continuing southeast to Beijing. Several trains each week reach Ulaanbaatar from both countries.

By Road

By road, you can travel by bus, car, or bike from Russia via Altanbulag and Tsagaan Nuur, and from China via Zamyn-Uud. These crossings are open to international travelers. All other border crossings are designated as "bilateral," meaning they are open only to citizens of the two bordering countries and not to third-country nationals.

Note: Crossing the border on foot is not allowed.
